February marks Heart Health Awareness Month—a time to reflect on how we care for our hearts and the small changes we can make to improve our health. For me, this month holds deep personal meaning. In 2014, my husband suffered a massive heart attack—an event that completely changed our lives. It was a wake-up call that led me to understand the profound impact food has on our health. That moment ignited my passion for creating simple, healthy meals that nourish the body and protect the heart.
In the weeks, months, and years following his heart attack, I dove deep into research on heart health and nutrition. I quickly realized that the food we eat every day plays a critical role in our well-being. I also realized there was quite a bit of contradictory information about there & I wanted simple answers.
I began making small, sustainable changes in our kitchen—swapping out refined oils for heart-healthy alternatives like avocado and olive oils, reducing processed foods, and embracing anti-inflammatory ingredients. These shifts weren’t about dieting or deprivation but about fueling our bodies with foods that heal and protect.

Through this journey, I discovered that creating heart-healthy meals doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple swaps and mindful cooking can make a significant difference. Here are a few easy ways to prioritize your heart health:
- Choose Healthy Fats: Replace refined oils and trans fats with heart-friendly options like olive oil, avocado oil, and nuts.
- Add More Fiber: Incorporate fiber-rich foods such as leafy greens, legumes, and whole grains to support cholesterol balance.
- Focus on Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Include foods like berries, turmeric, ginger, and fatty fish (like salmon) to help reduce inflammation.
- Limit Processed Foods: Reduce consumption of highly processed snacks and meals that are often high in sodium and unhealthy fats.
- Plan Ahead: Meal prepping can prevent last-minute unhealthy choices and make it easier to stay on track.
But you know what else I discovered, no matter what health issues one may be dealing with, these small changes will reduce inflammation and help everyone…not just heart health concerns. Reducing inflammation (by changing some of your food habits) will, without a doubt, make a positive impact on your health.
These simple steps laid the foundation for our family’s improved health (not just my husband but also myself) and inspired me to help others make similar changes.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve learned several things about healthy living.
- Keep it simple. Don’t over-complicate things and
- Small habits are where you find the big wins. Change happens with small steps, not giant overhauls.
- Focusing on reducing inflammation is the best way to begin a healing journey no matter your issue, gender, age, religion, or location.
This passion and experience led me to create a space where I could support others on their health journeys—a place to share practical strategies, simple ingredient swaps, and sustainable habits without the overwhelm.
I’ve been on my own healthy journey since 2017, and now my passion lies in helping others find their path. From 1:1 coaching to countless online cooking classes, masterclasses, and membership communities, I’ve seen firsthand how small, intentional changes can make a lasting impact.
What worked for me and helped Neil go from six prescription medications to just one? Simple, sustainable habits that became part of our daily routine. And now, I want to share those with you.
